Weekday Austrian Dinner at Schweighofers, TUESDAY, 22 April 2008

I am writing this from Tokyo, the city with the most Michelin stars on the planet, even though the main tactic for restaurants to get noticed here is to reject them when offered. I may do a blog about my trip here, so watch out for it later. For example, I visited the ramen (noodle) museum in Yokohama today and it is really surprising the variations in the taste and texture of ramen from different parts of Japan.

Anyway, coming back to the Dinner Club for April, I have a hunch that this month's dinner event is probably going to be pretty popular, even though it will be held on a weekday. It will be at a restaurant highly recommended by the Austrian consul to Lithuania. The place serves very authentic traditional Austrian food, which means that vegetarians might find this event quite tough going. However, the really good news is that this is another of our fixed-price events. So it will be a fantastic value-for-money dinner because one can have as much of the traditional Austrian Wiener Backhendel und Brathendel-Schmaus mit Beilage und Salat as you want for a fixed price of only 8 Euro. That's right - 8 Euro and you can enjoy as much of these highly recommended Austrian dishes as you can eat. So wear loose clothing, skip lunch and come on over!

The restaurant is called Schweighofers in Weimarerstrasse 12, 10625 Berlin, and their website is http://www.schweighofers.de/ if you want to check out their credentials. For me, I simply trust the recommendation of an experienced senior Austrian diplomat and friend, so I will be expecting good authentic Austrian food and lots of it. When we made our initial booking for Tuesday 22 April 2008, we were informed that there is a lot of demand so we cannot guarantee too many places for the dinner club, so please let me know asap if you would like to come to this serious mid-week dinner.

As usual, my email is chris@berlindinnerclub.com and the closing date for sending in your booking request is this Sunday, 6th April 2008, and the lucky ones will be notified the following week as usual. Oh, and please note that the price of 8 Euro covers only the meal - water, drinks and coffee will be extra, so the chances are your drinks bill may be more than your food!

And I must apologise for not making this dinner on a weekend as usual but (i) I have several commitments which I cannot avoid and (ii) this special offer applies only on Tuesdays for this April.

Best wishes from Japan.

Chris

How it went on the night...

I tried to tell everyone that chicken will never get on the endangered species list but that did not stop them having a go. As dinner evenings go, this was a biggish crowd split up over 3 tables and from the noise, I suspect that everyone had a very good time. Also, I don't think anyone went home hungry either! This chicken evening was actually cheaper than buying a bucket from KFC, and considerably better, so it was fantastic value for money. From what I gather, this place is now on the favourites list of several people and deservedly so as the chicken was really excellent and the host was extremely generous and pleasant. A great night out!
