"B" Dinner at Borchardt, Sat 19 January 2008

After watching Bee Movie, I felt that the only option for January is to pick a restaurant that begins with a "Bee" as well. So that narrowed the list down to around 246 restaurants but the task is made considerably easier by the fact that most of them are rubbish. So then we are left with excellent places such as Balthazar and Borchardt. I had liked Balthazar very much when I ate there privately but the place rather let us down a bit at our Dinner Club night there so now I think is the time to try an older established place favoured by many Berliners in the know.

Borchardt was actually originally located next door to its current location in Franzoische Strasse but an inconveniently placed bomb during WWII necessitated a relocation to the next building. The renovation was lovingly done, with great and painstaking attention to detail, and it is a place where one can actually feel the old Berlin blending in with the modernity that is Friedrichstrasse just a few metres away. But enough of the history lesson. Borchardt has not got its own website as that would probably be too modern, but virtually everyone writes praises about the place, so to find out more, just do a Google search on "Borchardt Berlin" and you can see what I mean. As an example, the British Daily Telegraph rates it as Berlin's top restaurant! But beware, as they also seem to think that the Cafe Am Neuensee is also a restaurant: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/graphics/2007/06/16/etberlincityguide.pdf

Anyway, the first Dinner Club night of 2008 is set for the evening of Saturday, 19 January, so as usual please do write in and let me know if you are willing to taste a bit of Berlin's history as well as fine Alsatian-German food. The email address is, as usual, chris@berlindinnerclub.com and please note that places are limited so an auto-selection will be done to pick the lucky few if the dinner is over-subscribed.

Hope to see you all soon!

Chris

How it went on the night...

For the first time, I experienced the famous delayed slow service written about by some diners there. It was really not so much fun as I felt a little let down and I will ring the restaurant to give them a piece of my mind. However, it was still very good to meet up with some old and new faces at the first DC night in 2008. The food was generous and pretty good, not spectacular, and some comparisons were suggested against other Austrian restaurants which will be followed up for sure. Still, a good night out overall, even though I had to skip the after-dinner drinks as I was feeling a little under the weather.
