Bright White Brunch at Schneeweiss on Sunday, 21 November 2010

As the days close in, the nights get longer and the weather gets nippier, I feel that we should aim for an event where the atmosphere is brighter, and I mean a lot brighter (as in really really white and bright). This time we will be doing Sunday brunch during the early part of the day, rather than another dinner in the dark of a cold winter-ish night. I am also hoping that this mitigates (a little) the effect of the clocks going forward at the end of October.

So there is now no need to head out on a blustery November evening this month, for we shall be gathering in the late morning of Sunday 21 November at Schneeweiss, Simplonstrasse 16, 10245 Berlin. If you are interested, the website is www.schneeweiss-berlin.de and please note that this place is in the depths of Friedrichshain. So I hope this proves yet again I am not biased against East Berlin in any way. The nearest S-Bahn station is Warschauer Strasse.

To be honest, I have been before to Schneeweiss several years ago for a rather insipid dinner but I have been told that they have improved markedly and that their brunch is now the best in the area. I am willing to believe it for the recent reviews have been good and consistent. Some feedback is on www.tripadvisor.com, for example. The kitchen style is Alpine, so I guess it means Alsace cooking, which can be pretty darn good. They also do weisswurst which I really like so I have pretty high hopes for a good brunch on Sunday. The eat-all-you-can brunch is very reasonably priced at less than 12 Euro, excluding drinks, so it's not an expensive start to the day at all.

As usual, please do drop me an email if you want to come along for probably the best brunch place in Friedrichshain. This may not mean much to you, but, hey, it means a lot to the people living there. And so I think it is definitely worth checking out. The place has won some German Design Prize so at least it is also not an ugly dive. And Denis and Ralf have been cooking here since 2004 so they must be doing something right (at last).

The closing date for bookings is Friday, 5 November and all those people who get a place will be notified by Monday 8 November latest. We do not have a big booking as the place is not that big, so do let me know soon, ok?

See you soon!

Chris

How it went on the day...

I think the overall impression of everyone is that Schneeweiss has definitely upheld its reputation as the best brunch restaurant in all of East Berlin, and done it quite easily too, I might add. Some dishes such as leberwurst, which I would normally never touch, tasted really very good and the weisswurst is about as authentic as it comes, according to 9 out of 10 people who have been to Bavaria. And the kaiserschwarm was a little unusual, being denser than usual but it tasted sublime nevertheless. So I think it is safe to suggest that most of us managed to fulfil our daily calorie requirements in this one meal (or after the first round). Well, I did anyway even though I am normally such a sensitive little delicate eater...
